Fish is often plentiful if you live on an island, and it’s the same inLuma Island. Like other cozy games, you’ll be able to catch a variety of fish for collection purposes and to use in different cooking recipes, along with different aquatic plants and sea life like Crabs.

Not only is fishing a core mechanic in general, but it’s also important to both the Fisherman and Treasure Hunter Professions if you choose to get a permit for them. Whether it’s for your profession or fun, we’ll tell you how to catch fish, where to find them all, and what you can do with them.

How To Catch Fish

To catchany fish or certain types of sea creatures, you’ll need aFishing Rod equipped with the right regional bait, like Caterpillars for farm or town-based fish.

First, cast your rod out to ornear the fish’s locationin the water and ayellow exclamation point will appearabove the fish’s head if you’rein its attention range.

Each fish has at leasttwoparticular swimming patterns that it will follow in the water source it’s located in,depending on the angle and location you cast your rod from.

After a second, thefish will bite, and you’ll get into the fishing minigame. During this portion, you’ll need tofollow the fish aroundwith your bobber whileavoiding any obstacles. When you’reclose enoughto the fish, agray indicator with a hook will appearabove its head.

As youkeep up with it, the catching indicator willflash quicker, andmore will appearat one time until youhit the reeling portion, then you’ll need torapidly click to bring the fish overto you and successfully catch it.

Wait for the fish at certain points in their swimming routinewhere you get the most time available without it being near an obstacle to make it easier to catch them.

Themore your Fishing Rod is upgraded, thequicker it’ll move, and it’ll beeasier to maneuver around obstacleswhile chasing a fish, and thetime needed to reel in a fish will be drastically reduced.

Types Of Fishing Obstacles

Once you beginexploring the second regionof the game,the Forest, and beyond, you’ll begin to have todeal with obstacleswhile fishing:rocks and whirlpools.

Rocks appear in the Forest,Mountain, andJungle Regions, and cause yourbobber to bounce off them. This willthrow you off course slightlyand interrupt the catching sequence, though itdoesn’t cause any damageto your rod or the bobber.

Thewhirlpools are similarin that they throw you off course, but theycause you to spin aroundin them for a moment,toss you much farther, and sometimes even in theopposite direction.

If you’requick enough or only skirt the very edge of the whirlpool, you may avoid being caught in it completelyand continue following the fish.

Fish willswim circles around or in between the rocks and whirlpoolsto make it harder for you to catch them, and incorporatemore complex swimming patternsin combination with this.

How To Catch Sea Creatures And Aquatic Plants

Besidesfish and what you can forage or catchfrom around water sources, you can find ahandful of other types of sea lifethat are used in differentFisherman or Cooking Professionrecipes:Jellyfish, Stingray, and Squid.

You stillneed a Fishing Rod and Baitto catch them, and they can befound in any of its home region’s water sources, but they can only becaught in spots without bubbles, and youcan’t have a fish nearbyor else it’ll be attracted instead.

You can also find materials like Hay, Stones, Ores, and Twigs when fishing from empty water, and these will beinstantly caught instead of needing to be reeled in.

As foraquatic plants and land-based sea creatureslike Mussels, theyspawn along any of their home region’s rivers, lakes, and beaches, and you canharvest them by handlike forageable items. These types will constantlyrespawn as the day goes on, and each time anew day starts.

How To Catch Treasure

Your fishing rod is also going to beused to catch treasure for Pirate-related recipesif you’re going for theTreasure Hunter profession.

Instead of bait, you’ll be usingdifferent types of magnets. A single metal bar makesten of its specific magnets, and they can beequipped via the bait menu.

Thetype of treasureyou can get is bothmagnet and region-specific. For example, if you use aMoonstone Magnet to fish at your farmor in town, you’ll stillonly get Sunken Farm Treasure, not the Forest or the Mountain type.

If youwanted the Sunken Mountain Treasurespecifically, you would have to bein the Mountain regionand use eitherMoonstone or Volcanic Magnetsfor it.

You can use higher-tier magnets to catch lower-tier treasure, but youcan’t use lower-tier magnets to catch higher-tier treasure.

All Bait And Fish Locations

Bait can becaught in any regionof the game, and they appearnear your character’s locationat a rate of aroundone critter every few seconds, though theirmovement speed, appearance, andwhat fish they can catch differ.

Each one you catchgives you a few Water Spirits, but if youdon’t catch themafter a few moments,they’ll disappear, but theyendlessly respawn, so there’sno penalty for missing outon one.

Beetles are unique in that they onlyappear on crops you’ve planted in tilled earth, and they appear at a much slower rate than their regional equivalent, the Caterpillar.

Differenttypes of Baitcan also bebought for Goldfrom theFisherman’s Shop in townif you don’t feel like catching any, as well as other important resources like Salt andMagnetsfor treasure hunting. Up to25 of each Bait and Magnetare availableper day, while you canbuy up to 50 for Salt.

All Fish And Sea Creatures

Each region hasthree fish to catchandfour types of sea creatures or aquatic plantsfor you to get, with theJungle region offering the most fishing spotsof any location in the game.

The regional Fish canalso be purchasedat theirrespective Mr. Truffle’s storesforfive of the regional Nature Currencyonce you’vecaught them at least once, and you’re able to buy up tofive per day.

Thesea creatures you need to use a Fishing Rod to catch aren’t found at Mr. Truffle’s or the Fisherman’s shopseven if you catch one.

If you wantextra sea creatures and aquatic plantswithout catching them by hand, they’re alsofound at the Fisherman’s Shopin town, like with Bait, and you can purchase up toten of each per day.

The majority of Fish, Sea Creatures, and Aquatic Plants areused in the Fisherman’s Profession as recipe ingredientsin the Fisherman’s Galley, alongsideregional Spice variationsmade in a Kiln from theirrespective forageables and Salt.

All Fisherman’s Galleyrecipes past the Novice Levelrequire acertain amount of Luma Energy to craft at first, but after making them for the first time, they’ll no longer need Luma Energy to be made.

Theamount of Luma Energy needed for each recipe may vary over time due to balance patches, which ensures the cost isn’t too great compared to when you get access to them.
