There are a lot of games that explore the Wild West in various ways, and while the setting is as diverse as the games themselves, it can be hard to get a sense of just when exactly a game like that takes place, especially if you are new to the western genre of video games.

Red Dead Redemptionhas been a groundbreaking start to a series that has been bringing new and old fans into the Western genre. But when exactly do we find John Marston hunting down the rest of the gang in this expansive tale of six-shooter revenge?

The first Red Dead Redemption takes place in 1911, at a time when society and industrialization were starting to take over the American West. You see various hints at this throughout the game as Marston is considered one of the last remainingcowboys of his era, the rest either retiring, having been captured, or killed.

There are also subtle hints at the timeframe of the game in the form of newspapers that report on the events of the First World War and other important events across the globe.

Undead Nightmare, in turn, takes place in 1914 as it follows up the events of the game’s main storyline.

Industrialization and the First World War are two of the main things that brought America into more of the global spotlight, boosting its economy and allowing people to expand society into the frontier of the West. This, in turn, makes the idea of the gunslinger harder to accomplish as the forces of the law and “polite society” expanded.
