The Witcher 4is arguably one of the best highly-anticipated titles currently in development right now, as the gamerecently entered full-scale production earlier this week. We still don’t know much about it,with only vague plot details from previous voice actorsto go off of in terms of story, butCD Projekt Redhas now given us an indication as to how long we’ll be waiting for it once it’s unveiled.
Speaking with Eurogamerabout what the studio learned during the development ofCyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski explained that one of the bigger lessons was how to be “smarter in how we want to announce and kick off marketing campaigns.” Nowakowski explains that following Cyberpunk 2077’s reveal during E3 2019 (remember those?), the plan was actually to launch a year later, as the studio wasn’t planning for a two-year marketing campaign.
The Witcher 4’s Release Date Is Likely Less Than Two Years After Reveal
As a result, CD Projekt Red has now learned how to kick off marketing campaigns for games when it’s “really, really sure” of the game’s release date, and has stated that it now expects “a slightly longer - but not two-year - lasting campaign” for new titles.
That doesn’t sound like a particularly massive revelation on the surface, but we can glean a couple of things from it. For starters, it suggests that CD Projekt Red plans on releasing The Witcher 4 less than two years after its officially unveiled and shown off in full. While we have no ide when CD Projekt Red is going to do that, we do at least know we’re not in for a massive wait for release when the game pops up at a showcase.
It also implies that CD Projekt Red’s games may not suffer as many delays in the future. Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed twice before it ended up finally launching in December 2020, while The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was also delayed from its original launch date, before finally settling on April 2015. With CD Projekt Red now only announcing release dates when it’s definitely sure it can hit them, we should see its games delayed less in the future.
In any case, it’s nice to know that The Witcher 4 will be with us fairly soon when its unveiled, unlike certain other games that have had full-blown trailer release, yet we’re still awaiting release dates. Yes,I’m looking at you Hollow Knight: SilksongandThe Elder Scrolls 6. We’re still waiting.
