Summary

The recent reveal ofThe Witcher 4at this year’s Game Awards surprised many, asCD Projektonly recently announced the game had gone into full production. While most of us expected a trailer to be at least a year away, we unexpectedly received afull cinematic trailerfeaturing our new protagonist, Ciri.

Since then, the never-ending grind of the Internet hassparked controversy where there is none. However, the rational and functional among us are excited about The Witcher 4. As Ciri is now the player character, many fans wondered what would become of her adopted father, Geralt.

Geralt in The Witcher 3 sat in a lavish chair in front of some candles, leaning forward as he prepares to play a round of Gwent.

We’re operating under the assumption that thecanon endingof The Witcher 3 is one where Geralt has a silver sword crafted for Ciri, finally “approving” of her choice to become a witcher. The other endings don’t make as much sense, and one set of endings leaves the fate of both Ciri and Geralt up in the air. According to CD Projekt, Geralt is expected to live a long time after the events of The Witcher 3, so we can assume he’ll probably be around in some capacity in The Witcher 4.

The Return of Geralt

Given that we already know that Gwent will bealive and well in The Witcher 4, some fans predict that Geralt will be thefinal bossof the mini-game. The veteran warrior proved in The Witcher 3 that not only is he the best monster slayer on the continent, but also a master at the card table.

Although that would certainly be a cool cameo, others want Geralt to have a more involved role in the story. A recent thread on Reddit bydonbosco2017suggests that Geralt could be the game’s narrator, a role similar to the one Dandelion played for him.

The top comment on the thread byEarly_Bookkeeper5394counters this, saying “I would rather have Dandelion to be honest, he’s the poet GOAT. I don’t think Geralt and Yen fit this job.” Others disagree, saying Geralt has a surprising poetic way with words.

Another idea proposed byMrtom987is that multiple beloved characters could narrate, including Geralt, Yennefer, Triss, Zoltan and Regis. As the commenter concedes in their message, this idea may be “too much.”

It’ll be interesting to see if The Witcher 4 utilises a narrator. It made sense for Dandelion to chronicle Geralt’s adventures because of their relationship, but Ciri is even more of a tragic lone wolf figure than Geralt at times, perhaps making a narrator inappropriate to the tone of her story.
