Fan-made remakes of olderElder Scrollsgames have the series' co-creator’s seal of approval. In a recent interview, Ted Peterson says that Daggerfall Unity in particular is “the best”, and credits it with reinvigorating interest in the game.
Speaking withVideoGamer, Peterson also suggests that he’d be up for seeing an official Daggerfall remake, but admits that would be up toBethesdanow, as he hasn’t worked on the series since Oblivion.
Ted Peterson shares how it feels to see his old games remade by fans
“Oh my god, Daggerfall Unity has been the best,” says Peterson. This is a fan-made remake that’s available to download now, and even has its ownGOG storefront page. It was completed in 2023 and lets you complete Daggerfall with improved graphics and gameplay.
However, Peterson also reflects on how gaming is the only medium that gets these kinds of remakes. “It’s funny because no one had to recreate Casablanca to say, ‘Oh my god, look at this movie from 70 years ago’. You just go like, ‘Yeah, it was of the era and the dialogue is great, and the chemistry is great’, and nobody says, ‘It’s fine for the era’.”
Despite that, he is a fan of the Elder Scrolls remakes, and says he “appreciates” the effort that fans have gone to in order to preserve them.
“No one could play Daggerfall for ten years. Maybe even longer. They could do DOSBox [an emulator], but it would be flaky and weird,” he says. “I mean, it totally reinvigorated people’s interest and people saying, ‘Hey, this was actually a decent game!'”
And speaking of it being a good game, he adds that there could maybe be an official “Daggerfall reboot” at some point. That would be up to Bethesda, of course. Right now, there are rumours of an Oblivion remake, but nothing about the older games in the series just yet
