Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog 3has surpassed $420 million at the global box office. This puts it ahead ofSonic the Hedgehog 2, making it the most successful film in the series.

This is despite initialreportsthat Sonic 3’s earnings were slower than the previous film, with releases in other countries appearing to give it a late boost. Its total tackings are reported to be $422 million at the time of writing, easily beating Sonic 2’s $405 million.

Sonic 3 Beats Sonic 2’s Global Box Office Takings

The third film is now the most successful one in the Sonic series

This was spotted by Sonic Stadium earlier today. According toBox Office Mojo, the reported box office earnings for Sonic 3 are now $422 million, comfortably placing it above Sonic 2.

It comes after Sonic 3’s huge opening was enough toboost the series' total box office takings to $1 billion. That’s not bad going at all when you consider how the series began, with a disappointing trailer that showed off a character model for Sonic that appealed to basically no one.

Spoiler warning for Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s post-credits scenesThe film’s success doesn’t appear to have come as a surprise to Paramount becausethe studio greenlit a fourth entry before Sonic 3 had even opened in theatres. The post-credits scenes give us a rough idea of what’s going to happen, as the first one confirmed that both Metal Sonic and Amy Rose are joining the story. The next one also made it clear that Shadow somehow survived the events of the film, so he could return alongside these two newcomers.

As for who else could make an appearance, we’ll have to wait and see.Jim Carrey returning as Dr. Ivo Robotnik is up in the air, so the writers arepreparing for either scenario. We’ll just have to wait and see if that means Sonic is going up another big bad next time, since Metal Sonic has to come from somewhere.
