Summary

When it comes to video games that deserve more love or a sequel, Sleeping Dogs ranks pretty high. The martial arts focussed open world game had us knocking teeth out and chowing down on pork buns all around Hong Kong, but it also had a great story. Unfortunately, developer United Front game never got to make a sequel before shutting down.

While rumours of a Sleeping Dogs movie were floating around, there was never really anything concrete. A martial arts movie centered around the triads of Hong Kong seems like a pork bun recipe for success, but it just never really took off. However, it seems a superhero is still trying to make it happen.

Simu Liu Is In Conversation With The Rights Holders Of Sleeping Dogs

Simu Liu, known for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and loved for Kim’s Convenience, is in talks with the rights holders of the IP. While there isn’t any more information on how the talks are progressing, Liu confirmed that he is, in fact, in conversation with them.

When asked on Twitter if Liu would be up for playing Wei Shen in a potential Sleeping Dogs Movie, he replied, “Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen!” While that isn’t a confirmation that the movie is actually happening, it is a spark of hope for fans of the neglected game.

This isn’t the first time a Sleeping Dogs movie was potentially in the works. There was a film adaptation in the works for a long time, butactor Donnie Yen revealed that it was no longer in development. Yen revealed that he was very excited and full of ideas, but even after investing his own money, it didn’t work out. “I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right?” he said. I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing."

Hopefully, Liu has better luck than the veteran actor and we’ll eventually get to see a live action version of Sleeping Dogs. On a personal note, Donnie Yen should definitely be in the movie in some capacity.
