Summary

BothPlayStationandXboxcurrently have digital-only consoles on the market, further suggesting that within the next generation or two, physical games might have largely become a thing of the past. Something that might make PlayStation delay that inevitability is how well its detachable disc drive has been selling. It’s back in stock yet again on Amazon, but this time, it appears to be staying that way.

ThePS5’s detachable disc drive was originally released as an added extra for the digital-only slimmer version of the console released in 2023. However, it wasn’t until PlayStation confirmed that the PS5 Pro would only be available as a digital console that the disc drive started to become hugely popular. It has sold out everywhere it’s been restocked almost immediately since the Pro’s reveal, but this latest restock is the first indicator that supply might finally be meeting demand.

The disc drive wasrestocked on Amazon at around 1:30 am ESTand, at the time of typing this, is still available. There’s a very real chance at least part of the reason it is still in stock three hours later is because they were restocked in the middle of the night. However, previous restocks have sold out very quickly regardless of the time of day they’ve happened, so hopefully, at the very least, those of you who want one will be reading this before people start waking up and they sell out again.

Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition Consoles

Sony’s disc drive is the perfect way to play physical disc collections on the latest PlayStation consoles. The accessory attaches to the sides of PS5 Slim Digital and PS5 Pro consoles. Once installed, buyers can also watch 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD media. Owners will need an internet connection to pair the drive with consoles.

Part of the reason the disc drive has been so hard to come by is because of scalpers buying up stock whenever it becomes available.Listings selling the drives for inflated pricesstarted to appear shortly after the Pro was revealed and they’ve been hard to find ever since. Scalpers certainly aren’t deterred by the time of day stock is made available, although the 1 am drop out of nowhere might partly be an attempt to stop all of the disc drives going to scalpers.

On the bright side, even though scalpers have likely been making a killing on disc drives, they’ve taken a big hit on PS5 Pros. Assuming they’d sell out just like the base version of the console did, scalpers bought up Pro stock hoping to sell it on for more. The trouble is, the Pro hasn’t sold out anywhere and remains readily available. That has forced some scalpers to sell the newer more powerful version of the PS5 at a loss.
