Summary
If you’ve playedPokemon Trading Card Game Pocket’sbattle mode, especially duringthe recent event, you’ll have noticed a couple of specific decks popping up over and over—Mewtwo exandPikachu ex.
These decks quickly became the meta following the game’s launch due to the fact that players can play an incredibly formidable ex card, complete with huge HP and powerful attacks on turn one.
It’s caused frustration among TCG Pocket’s community. However, while frustrated, many have shared what they use to combat these decks.
The True Pikachu Ex Counter
The most popular counters to Pikachu ex decksfocus on Marowak ex.
Naturally, Ground-type Pokemon are the number one pick here, exploiting Pikachu’s weakness and hitting it for an extra 20 damage, and Marowak is king here as, with a little luck, it can hit Pikachu ex for 200 damage off just two energy.
Plenty of posts have popped up on TCG Pocket’s subreddit with people swearing by their Marowak decks, which often also include Dugtrio and Sandslash, and it certainly seems a solid counter.
The True Mewtwo Ex Counter
In a similar vein to using Marowak as a Counter to Pikachu, players are using Weezing and Arbok to counter Mewtwo.
Althoughtechnically, they’re both Poison-type Pokemon, in thePokemon TCG, they’re represented as Dark, thus hitting Mewtwo ex for plus 20 damage.
The Weezing/Arbok combination allows players to poison opposition Pokemon before trapping them in. Unable to retreat, these Pokemon take poison damage each turn. Coupled with Sabrina or Pidgeot, which forces the opponent to switch out their active Pokemon, and this deck is a force to be reckoned with.
Other Successful TCG Pocket Decks
Another popular alternative that’s been shared on thePokemon Trading Card Game Pocket subredditis theStarmie ex deck. Its ability to hit hard and fast, with 90 damage off two energy, and the ability to stack energy quickly with Misty has made it a popular choice. It does suffer a little against Pikachu EX, but if things go your way, it’s a viable alternative. Plus bonus points for countering another meta deck—Charizard ex.
Alongside Starmie, aplayer showed off their Venusaur ex Deck. It doesn’t suffer from a weakness to Pikachu or Mewtwo, and while its energy cost is higher, coupled with Erika, this deck excels at keeping itshigh-HP Pokemonhealthy.
Another popular deck regularly showcased on TCG Pocket’s subredditrevolves around Exeggutor ex. For a single measly energy, Exeggutor can hit for 80 damage, and its 160 HP means it can withstand both Pikachu and Mewtwo’s most powerful attack. Pairing it with the Butterfree promo from the recentLapras challengeand Erika will giveExeggutoreven more longevity, making it a thorn in those meta decks' sides.
