Marvel Rivalsjust unveiled its first Spring Festival event with a brand-new trailer, and—wait a minute, is that Lucioball?
The biggest addition to the season is a new 3v3 football limited-time mode (orsoccer for the Yanks) played with Iron Fist, Black Widow, and Star-Lord. Sure,Overwatchdidn’t invent football, but a) the arena looks near-identical, and b) it’s a 3v3 LTM in a game known for apeing Overwatch.
It’s Lucioball, c’mon.
However, the LTM in Marvel Rivals is called Clash of Dancing Lions, lending to the Lunar New Year theme (ie Spring Festival or Chinese New Year).
But the lion doesn’t appear in the Lunar Zodiac whatsoever (the closest is a tiger). 2025 is actually the Year of the Wood Snake, which is whyOverwatch’s Lunar New Year eventis themed around snakes, with hide-and-seek battles that allow you to transform into props, double jump, and scale walls.
It’s more likely that Rivals is basing its Lunar New Year on the iconic Lion Dances that are performed during the annual ceremonies, which in fairness is a stark difference from Overwatch’s approach. But it would’ve been a perfect opportunity for some Serpent Society and Loki-themed skins, I’m just saying.
What Else Is Included In Marvel Rivals Spring Festival?
Given the lion theme, there are a few skins to match: Star-Lord: Lion’s Mane, which can be earned for free, and two paid store cosmetics, Iron Fist: Lion’s Gaze and Black Widow: Lion’s Heartbeat.
We don’t know much else about the event right now (other than the scant details onthe official patch notes blog), but it starts tomorrow at 9am UTC, so we won’t have to wait long to dig into it for ourselves.
