A good player that picks Hela, Hawkeye, Iron Fist, Luna Snow or any other overpowered character can sway a match on their own.
However, overpowered characters aren’t something that a fraction of competitive players have to deal with. Once you reach Diamond Rank in Marvel Rivals, the game implements a hero ban system that allows teams to vote on which characters should be banned for the upcoming match. That way, any characters deemed unfair are swiftly kicked to the curb.
Marvel Rivals Fans Are Calling For Hero Bans For Every Stage Of Ranked
It’s proven to be a very popular system, and there are calls from a lot of people for competitors like Overwatch to adopt a similar system, but it has one fatal flaw at the moment. A lot of players are baffled as to why hero bans are something that only Diamond Rank players can use, and playerslike Reddit user AngryRaccoon44are urging NetEase to extend the same system to every stage of Ranked instead.
One of the main arguments for this is how prevalent these characters are in the lower ranks, with a user called Cursedcake1993 annoyed that low rank matches are usually decided by how good a Hela or Hawkeye is. Another big reason for extending the hero ban system is pointed out by user Sandy_Griffin, as even Diamond players can use hero bans if they’re teamed up with Platinum-ranked players.
The only real downside to hero bans at the moment is players deliberately targeting certain characters because they know a certain player is good with them, but that is easily fixed by hiding usernames before matches start. There doesn’t seem to be that many reasons why hero bans shouldn’t be included in ranked matches from at least Silver, as you’re able to also take characters to Quickplay if you want to try them out without fear of bans.
Season 0 is coming to an end pretty soon, which will most likely result in a wave of nerfs and buffs, so Hawkeye and Hela may not even be targeted by hero bans for that much longer. We’ll have to see what changes NetEase makes in the coming weeks, and whether it will act on feedback such as an extended hero ban systemor the removal of seasonal buffs.
