Caves of Qudhas been in early access for quite some time. The 1.0 version of the game launched at the beginning of December 2024 though, opening the world up to new players looking for the challenge. If you are deciding whether or not you should get Caves of Qud, you’ve come to the right place.
Here, we will go over whether or not Caves of Qud is worth playing or not. This will cover reviews, time expenditure, and costs, as well as some insight from players. Overall, the choice is up to you, but this should help you see if Caves of Qud is up your alley or not.
Review
Caves of Qud is set in aprocedurally generated worldwhere you can build your character from the ground up, or choose from a variety of pre-set options. After a quick tutorial, you’ll be thrown into theharsh world where death may be lying around the next corner.
Although Caves of Qud has simple graphics, it manages to draw you into the game almost immediately. The world is lush with things to do,from exploring abandoned ruins to befriending members of a faction. Rather than feeling like you’re playing a video game, Caves of Qud feels like you’vefully stepped into a new world.
We need to talk about the difficulty though, as this is often brought up. When starting a new game, you canchoose from a variety of modes that make the game a bit more difficult. This is great if you want a hardcore adventure, but thankfully, you may opt for a more relaxing option;Wander mode.
Caves of Qud holds your hand in a quick tutorial and spits you out onto the surface of the world, where you will most likely die quickly to a relatively low-level enemy in a few hits. When this happens, it’s time to dive in again!
Some may think that this takes the roguelike aspect away, but we understand thatsome people just wanna explore, and that’s okay.Of course, the classic Caves of Qud experience involves dying time and time again.
Overall, Caves of Qud is awonderfully immersive game that will leave you hooked for hours on end. There is enough freedom to approach situations however you see fit, making each run a truly unique experience.
Time Expenditure
Caves of Qud has amain story that takesroughly 10-15 hours to complete. This doesn’t account for the wide variety of explorable content in the game. Additionally, if are new to the game,it may take you a bit longer to get the hang of things.
Overall, it’s important to keep in mind that there isno standard completion time.Caves of Qud lets you explore an entire vast world that has tons of content. It’s possible to just do the main story and stop, but the real fun comes when youexplore every nook and cranny of the world. If you plan on doing this, you can expect to spend dozens of hours in the game.
Cost
Caves of Qud costs$29.99 USD.You’ll also be able to purchase extra content, includinga soundtrack for $9.99 USD and Pets of Harvest Dawn for $4.99 USD.Pets of Harvest Dawn is a small content pack that adds a variety of companions to the game.
These companions aren’t necessary, but they make a nice little addition to the game.
What Players Are Saying
A Remarkable Achievement - Matt Arnold
Caves Of Qud is a remarkable game, the kind that you’re able to get lost in for hours despite its Atari-style graphics. Between its fascinating world, infinite replayability, and harsh-but-fair difficulty, it gets an immediate recommendation from me for anyone who likes their RPGs immersive and full of danger.
Worth The Complete Immersion - Jacqueline Zalace
I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I first started playing Caves of Qud, but it was well worth it. The game feels beautifully handcrafted even though much of the world is procedurally generated. Somehow, the vast world never felt unnecessarily empty; I was always running into new things/creatures.
Don’t let the appearance fool you. Caves of Qud is a wonderful experience that can be hard to get the hang of, but still so satisfying to play.
