VRChatis a multiplayer virtual space where people can hang out, chat, and upload original content like 3D avatars and explorable worlds. Although the space is designed to be explored with VR head-mounted displays, it can also be played without the headset on a Windows PC.
VRChat has a built-in trust system where users can climb the ranks to unlock different labels and functionality. The system is a moderating tool that helps filter out audio clutter and distractions. It works together with the safety system to help protect users.
What Are VRChat’s Trust Ranks?
VRChat’s trust system is based on a five-point scale:
New members tend to start off as visitorsbefore slowly climbing through the ranks.
Special Ranks
Three ranks don’t fall on the scale, which are known as Special Ranks:
TheNuisance rank is given to users who are de-rankedbecause of their activity. If someone has the Nuisance rank, they won’t be able to show their avatar and will be muted by default.
Friends, on the other hand, are users you have connected withand friended. Their avatar will be visible to you automatically unless you change your safety settings.
Lastly,Administrators are VRChat Team members. This rank is generally hidden unless you look at their profile on the website.
What Abilities Do Different User Ranks Have?
The higher a rank the user has, the more abilities they have. Here’s an overview of what unlocks at each rank:
Trust Ranks And The Safety System
The trust and safety systems in VRChat work togetherclosely to help monitor and regulate the environment.
VRChat’s built-in safety system allows users to apply different preferences and filters to users based on their rank. For example, someone can use different Shield Levels to filter out audio or hide avatars from Users with certain ranks.
You can set your Safety Shield to Maximum, Normal, None, or Custom. When you use Custom, you can choose exactly what you see depending on someone’s Trust Rank.
By default, each rank has its own settings in the safety system. On the Normal setting, you’ll see more from users with higher Trust Ranks.
Everyone has this setup by default unless they change it themselves. You can update your Shield Level in the menu.
How To Check Someone’s Rank
You canfind someone’s User Rank by looking at the quick menu. Their rank is in the upper-left part of their nameplate.
If you’re in the same world as someone, their username should appear in the menu. If you select it, you should be able to see their full profile.
How To Find Your Trust Rank
Your trust rank is visible on your profilewhich you may check via the quick menu. It should say what rank you are underneath your username on the top-left-hand side.
Known and Trusted Users can hide their rank, appearing as a User instead. So, some people’s Ranks may be higher than they seem. If you have a high enough trust level, you can do this in your profile via the menu.

How To Increase Your Trust Rank
Before you may start gaining Trust Ranks, you need to upgrade your accountby associating it with an email.
After that, you canincrease your Trust Rank over time by playing the game and connecting with other users.
How To Upgrade Your Account
To start gaining Trust Ranks, you must have an upgraded account. This is done byadding an emailto your account using the following steps:
Tips For Increasing Your Trust Rank
While some users have speculated about it,there is no definitive strategy for increasing your Trust Rankin VRChat. VRChat has also kept the targets for hitting each Trust Rank private so bad actors can’t exploit or mine them.
However, some key things can help to increase your Trust Rank over time. The easiest way to scale the ranks is by hanging out and exploring worlds. Having friends on the platform also helps.
Theexact amount of time and friends needed to rise through the ranks seems to varyfrom user to user. More time and friends do help to build an account’s trust, though.
There isn’t any way of meaningfully rushing or speedrunning your Trust Rank. The best thing to do is enjoy engaging with VRChat’s community and spending time there.
Increasing Trust By Uploading Content
Creating and uploading content is another way of building trust in VRChat. This includes uploading custom worlds and avatars that you have made.
New Users can upload avatars, which change their appearance in VRChat, and private worlds. Once you reach the User Rank, you can also start uploading public worlds to Community Labs for other users to enjoy.
If you have the Visitor Trust Rank, you won’t be able to upload any of your own content.
Visitors should focus on spending time in other people’s worlds listed in the Community Labs and connecting with other users instead. Once you get past this point, you can start uploading avatars and worlds too.
Using VRChat+ To Increase Trust
Users canincrease their Trust Rank by up to one level by subscribing to VRChat+, VRChat’s premium paid-for service. VRChat+ is available on a monthly and annual subscription model through both the Steam and Meta Quest stores.
A VRChat+ subscription will increase the trustworthiness of your account, but it may not increase it by enough for your rank to increase by a level. This is especially true if you have a higher trust level.
Thetrust bonus you get from subscribing to VRChat+ only happens once. This means that if you get a VRChat+ subscription to go from being a Visitor to a New User, you won’t be able to use it again to increase from a New User to a User.
Things To Avoid While Building Trust
While VRChat’s team have kept the requirements for reaching each Trust Rank quiet, they have made it clear what won’t help while building trust.
Having a higher number of friends helps to build trust, butsending friend requests en mass to loads of users at once looks suspiciousand holds your efforts back. attempt to connect with other users sincerely.
You don’t need to build trust in VRChat by talking to loads of strangers. Asking people in your community to see if other people you know use it or would be interested in using it with you works just as well.
When increasing your hours spent in VRChat, you shouldn’t just let your avatar idle. This also means you shouldn’t leave the game open while you do something else.Your time spent in VRChat should be interactiveinstead.
The third thing toavoid while building trust is uploading loads of meaningless, low-quality worlds or avatars. It won’t make your account seem more legitimate and might damage the amount of trust in your profile instead.
This may seem obvious, butthe main way to lose trust or even get de-ranked is by acting in ways that violate VRChat’s community guidelines. Examples of this could include spamming or harassing other users.
