Summary
Since the original release of Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001 on the original Xbox,Halohas been well-regarded as one of the preeminent first-person shooters. Its influence spans decades, and its impact is undeniable.
But what if Halo was a third-person shooter a laGears of War? It turns out that it was a real possibility at one point. And thanks to a massive batch of leaks, we now have our first look at what could have been many moons ago.
First-Person Or Third-Person, Halo Is Still Awesome
The batch of leaks, which total more than 90GB, seemingly come from Digsite,a group of modders that were working with Halo Studios on restoring lost or cut content. They span over 25 years of Halo’s history, including Halo’s pre-Xbox origins, when it was being considered for the Mac.
One of the biggest elements of the leak is the cut third-person beta.
Not only is footage of the game in third-person out in the wild,it’s actually playable for those who manage to download it on PC.
The footage is a bit more extensive than what was originally available online, when Steve Jobs showcased the work in progress.
More than anything, it gives an even greater glimpse at what could have been had the series maintained the third-person point of view. Sure, the footage is particularly clunky as it’s not finalized, but it does showcase a unique reality where players do not literally become Master Chief, but control him from behind.
