Summary

Mike York, a former animator forRockstar Games, has recently shared his thoughts onGrand Theft Auto 6’s framerate and noted that he thinks it’ll run at 30fps on consoles.

Even though we really know next to nothing concrete about GTA 6aside from its setting, two playable characters, and its release window that Take-Two Interactive swears by, that hasn’t stopped us all from talking about every aspect of it for the past year and a bit.One topic of conversation that comes up frequently is GTA 6’s framerate.

While most of us agree that Grand Theft Auto 6 will likely be 30 frames per second on consolesdue to how far Rockstar is likely to push the tech like it did with the similarly 30fpsRed Dead Redemption 2, there are some that think the leap to current-gen will be enough for it to reach 60fps. We won’t know for sure, but an ex-Rockstar developer has a good idea.

Don’t Expect GTA 6 To Hit 60fps On Consoles

As reported by GamesRadar+, former Rockstar Games animator Mike York (who worked on both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2)recently took part in an episode of Kiwi Talkz, where he inevitably ended up chatting about Rockstar’s next massive release, GTA 6. The conversation naturally shifted to the game’s performance, a big topic of debate among fans.

York very quickly said his piece about GTA 6’s likely framerate on consoles, noting that he isn’t sure if the developers will be able to “pull off 60fps”, before noting that he thinks it’s likely they’re instead aiming for a locked 30 on consoles. The former animator then says that Rockstar is going to try and optimise it to the point that it never drops below 30.

I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60fps. I don’t think so. I think they’re gonna be shooting for 30fps. And a locked 30fps, meaning it never dips below that. They’re going to attempt to optimize as much as they can to where it never goes below 30. - Mike York

Keep in mind that York is specifically talking about console performance here, as he notes that players will likely be able to bump that up to higher framerates if the game ever comes to PC. He also points out that he’s not sure if the PS5 Pro’s framerate boosting will apply to GTA 6, which could bring it higher than 60fps at launch.

Unfortunately, York’s insight into the situation can no longer be viewed as theanimator requested for the episode of Kiwi Talkz to be taken down. It’s not clear if this is due to his comments on the framerate (which are really just speculation) and the attention it garnered, but you’ll unfortunately have to take the transcription’s word for it for now.
