Summary

Ah,Grand Theft Auto 6. It’s difficult to describe the extreme level of anticipation that fans are feeling for the next instalment inRockstar’s beloved series. Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the best-selling games of all time without even accounting for the revenue made from GTA Online’s microtransactions. The popularity of the title can’t be overstated.

Making a game that’s bigger and more popular than Grand Theft Auto 5 is a tall order for Rockstar, but GTA 6 certainly has the prerequisite hype to at least get millions of people playing the game at launch. It’s at a point now where fans are getting conspiratorial - trying to predict when Rockstar is going to release the next trailer or promotional material. A brave task considering Rockstar has traditionally been anything but predictable.

While with most games you can generally predict when the studio is going to promote them, usually during one of Geoff Keighley’s tri-annual reveal shows, Rockstar has never followed suit. The newest conspiracy theory floating around is that a promotional post for Grand Theft Auto Online which depicts the moon is actually a hint for when the next Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer will premiere (nice spot,Eurogamer).

Speak To Me Luna

The post shows an Online character leaning against a car in front of a garment factory with the moon visible in the background.Fabrizerlo on Reddittheorises that the moon’s lunar phase, a waning gibbous, means the next trailer will be announced on November 22, as that’s the next day our real world is going to have a waning gibbous moon phase.

Now, while this might sound far-fetched, this theory isn’t completely out-of-pocket. A separate GTA Online promotional post in September 2023 featured the moon, also in a waning gibbous lunar phase, and as it turns out, the announcement for GTA 6’sfirst trailerarrived on a day (December 1) where the real-world moon was in a waning gibbous phase.

Gibbous no longer sounds like a real word.

Is this a coincidence? Almost definitely. However, should Rockstar announce Grand Theft Auto 6’s trailer on November 22, then we all owe Fabrizerlo an apology.
