Summary
GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition launched in 2021 toimmense backlash. From wonky, AI-upscaled textures to unsettling models and even new bugs, it was far from the definitive version of these games. But four years later, fans are trying to salvage the mess that Grove Street Games left behind.
Cue GTA Vice City: Next-Gen Edition, which brings the Miami-set classic to the GTA 4 engine, ie RAGE.
“This mod is not just another conversion of the city, but a complete transfer of all missions from the original game”,the mod page’s description reads. “The official remaster uses the Unreal Engine for rendering, but the game’s physics engine is still RenderWare, released more than 20 years ago, with outdated mechanics and animations.”
We tried to collect all the best from previous versions of GTA: Vice City, package it, and release a ‘remaster’ that this game really deserves.
The mod launches on January 25 — just four days from now — and to celebrate, the team released a brand-new trailer to show off their revamped, current-gen take on Vice City in action.
Fans Are Already Preparing For The Takedown
Rockstar has a habit of taking down mods. Only five days ago, the hotly-anticipated Liberty City Preservation Project, which sought to bring GTA 4’s map into GTA 5, wastaken down after conversations with the developer.
Before the Definitive Edition trilogy launched, not only were the original games delisted, but several of their most popular mods were taken down, too, paving the way for the official remasters to take their place.
Given that this mod portsallof Vice City, not just its map, few expect it to last long. Some are begging Rockstar to leave it be, others are warning fans to download and archive the mod before the inevitable happens, while some muse that it’s “going straight to a locker underwater.”
