Summary
The Game Awards 2024nominations havebeen revealed. This means that the contenders for Game of the Year 2024 have been narrowed down to just six titles - and for the first time ever, one of them is DLC rather than a full game.
As just revealed by The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley, the Game of the Year 2024 nominees are as follows:
Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree Is A Game Of The Year Contender
For the first time in The Game Awards history, a piece of DLC is a contender for Game of the Year. It was suspected that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree would make the cut after The Game Awards clarified that “expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes and remasters"are eligible for all categories, and now we know that this is absolutely the case. This decision proved divisive with the gaming community, with some feeling that only full games should be up for GOTY.
If Shadow of the Erdtree wins, then in a way, Elden Ring would have won GOTY twice, with the base game winning in 2022.
If we’re going based on Metacritic performance, then the frontrunners will be Metaphor: ReFantazio, Astro Bot, and Shadow of the Erdtree, which all sit at scores of 94. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a little behind at 92, then there’s Balatro with 90, and Black Myth: Wukong in the back with 81.
The winner will be revealed at The Game Awards on December 12. Including the preshow, it runs for about four hours. This means that for those of us in Europe, it will be a long, long night. Or, rather, the early morning once it’s over.
