Summary

In case you missed it,PlayStationis celebrating its 30th anniversary. That is 30 years since the original PlayStation debuted in Japan on June 19, 2025. For its part, PlayStation has gone all out for the celebration, releasing a limited-edition PS1-themed PS5 Pro,along with some neat PlayStation-centric themes.

That said, the festivities aren’t just limited to PlayStation, as Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, polled its readers to find out what is the best PlayStation video game of all time. For background, roughly 4,000 people voted, and pollsters were not limited to PS exclusives or any one system, making the results span all of PlayStation’s storied history.

To no surprise,Final Fantasy 7was voted as the No. 1 best PlayStation game of all time by readers. That said, the rest of the list is chock-full of some no-brainer titles likeMetal Gear Solid 3(No. 18),Crash Bandicoot(No. 27) andResident Evil(No. 5), among others.

However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few shockers, especially what came in at No. 2.

Monster Hunter Rules All

There is not one, but twoMonster Huntergames within the Top 10 of best PlayStation games of all time, and three in the top 15 alone. Indeed, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G was ranked as the No. 2 best PS game, with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd as No. 6 andMonster Hunter: Worldat No. 12.

It’s no secret that Monster Hunter is massively popular in Japan, but seeing twoPSPgames in the top 10 above the likes of MGS 3 and evenGran Turismois still pretty noteworthy.

Oddly enough, only onePlayStation 3title made the cut, withThe Last of Uschecking in at No. 29. That means noUncharted,ResistanceorRatchet & Clank. Additionally, only one otherPS4title besides World was voted, asGhost of Tsushimarounded out the list at No. 30.

The last noteworthy bit is the lack ofPlayStation 5, as not one PS5 title made the list. Granted, the PS5 is still relatively young, but even then, it has had a few noteworthy releases, likeReturnal,Demon’s Soulsand even two Final Fantasy titles (Rebirthand16).Given that PlayStation has shown no signs of stopping anytime soon, it’ll be interesting to see what gets chosen at its 35th and (gasp) 40th anniversaries.
