Summary

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthdirector Naoki Hamaguchi has discussed what’s next for his team after the Remake trilogy is over and suggested they could work on the next mainlineFinal Fantasy.

Considering how long Final Fantasy 7 fans waited for the official announcement that a remake was being made (god, take me back to E3 2015), it’s a bit of a shock to the system to think that the trilogy is approaching its end. Shocking though it is, that’s the hard truth we have to face now thatRebirth has been out for some time and we approach news on the unnamed third entry.

Even though Square Enixhasn’t even revealed an official title for the third and final part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, it’s been surprisingly open about its development and progress.Alongside hearing plenty about airships and the current state of the game, Rebirth’s developers have even started thinking about what comes next.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Isn’t Sure What Comes After Remake Part 3

As pointed out by Twitter user Genki_JPN,GamesRadar+ recently had the chance to chat with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchiat The Golden Joysticks Awards, where they talked about the development of the Remake trilogy. After musing about how the Reibrth team has worked together so much over the last decade, Hamaguchi pondered what’s next.

Hamaguchi notes that the Rebirth team is still working on the third and final part of theFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketrilogy and that they need to get that “out of the door” before thinking about what’s next. That being said, the director talks about the team’s next project and notes that he’s not sure what it is, but that it could be the “next numbered Final Fantasy”.

When we get to the end of the trilogy, in terms of what the next project that the team works on, I really don’t know yet at all. It could be the next numbered Final Fantasy. It could be a completely different brand. We might start up a completely new brand. - Naoki Hamaguchi

Before you gettooexcited, Hamaguchi does say that it could also end up being a “completely different brand” or something that team comes up with themselves, which suggests that it’s nowhere near set in stone right now. Despite that, it’s interesting that Hamaguchi references the next mainline Final Fantasy as an option,as that’s something that’s not really been discussed or mentioned after FF16.
