Summary
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remakeproducer Masaaki Hayasaka revealed that he would like to tackleFinal Fantasy 6next.
“It’s not that we have concrete plans for this, but personally I would have to say Final Fantasy 6,” Hayasaka said in an interview withInversewhen asked what other remakes he’d like to see. “Octopath Traveler— the first HD-2D title — was developed while referencing Final Fantasy 6, as it had the highest quality pixel art.
“I would love to see how the game we referenced would look with the HD-2D art style. Because this art style itself was created while referencing such titles, it’s highly compatible with games originally made using pixel art.”
A HD-2D Remake Is More Plausible Than A Final Fantasy 7-style Reimagining
Final Fantasy 7 Remakeproducer Yoshinori Kitase commented on a possible FF6 remake back in January, claiming thatit would take “twice as long” to develop as Rebirth did.
A HD-2D remake in the vein of Dragon Quest 3 seems a more reasonable idea then. Not only would it be more faithful, but no doubt less intensive than a full-blown reimagining split into enormous parts.
But that’s not the only interesting tid-bit that Kitase revealed. He also said that “there are a lot of people inside [Square Enix] who want to remake [Final Fnatast 6],” so there’s clearly a lot of buzz surrounding this RPG icon. Whether that buzz ever turns into something more substantial, time will tell.
