The Sims 4lets you build your dream house or storefront, with a variety of lot types to choose from. In previous Sims games, you were able to lay down lots in a town, but in The Sims 4, there are preset lots that you can tweak and build on.
Although these lot locations are static, you’ll still be able to choose from a variety of types. In this guide, we are going to look at every lot type available in The Sims 4. This will include base game lots, as well as ones that unlock with certain expansions to the game.
Residential Vs. Community Lots
First and foremost, it’s important to note thatlots have two main categories;residential and community. These are pretty self-explanatory. Residential lots arewhere your Sims live, while community lots arewhere Sims gather.
A community lot can have a bed, but there is no family that lives on the property. Overall, justconsider community lots as anything besides residences.
Every Residential Lot Type
Now, let’s look at all residential lots in The Sims 4. It’s important to note thatthe base game just has the standard ‘Residential’ lot;there are no other types that you can choose from. As such, this list below willmainly highlight expansion lots, including the pack and specifications.
Residential
Base Game
This is the typical lot that you build a house on.
City Living
Eco Lifestyle
This is a simple apartment in a building made of several.
you may’t make your own apartment building; this is locked to specific lots.
Discover University
Lovestruck
This is a penthouse on the top of a tall building.
You can’t make your penthouse; this is locked to specific lots.

Britechester has pre-made dorms, but you can make your own too.
Tiny Home
Tiny Living Stuff
These are just really small houses, with three tiers of tininess (small, tiny, and micro). Each type has its own tile limit and benefits.
Haunted House
Paranormal Stuff
Haunted houses are a bit spooky when night falls. Ghosts may appear, things may move, and electronics may flicker.
Rental
For Rent
This functions like a customizable apartment complex, separate from the apartment type listed above.
Every Community Lot Type
There are quite a few more community lots in the base game of The Sims 4, so let’s go over these first before diving into the DLC lots.

The lot will need a bar in order to become a… bar.
If you add bowling stuff, this can become a bowling alley.
The lot will need exercise equipment to become a gym.

This is a lot where Sims can read books as well as use any computer placed.
Sims won’t actually be able to take home books, just read them.

These are pretty similar to bars, but more entertainers will appear here.
These are lots filled with artwork and sculptures.
Museums can also have easels for Sims to paint on.
Nightclub
Again, these are similar to bars and lounges, but Sims will be more inclined to dance and DJ.
Park
These are outdoor spaces where Sims can hang out.
Typically, these have chess tables, play areas for children, and a bathroom.
National Park
These are outdoor spaces similar to normal parks, but they are a bit more ‘outdoorsy’.
National parks need a picnic table, grill, and trash can.

This is like a hybrid residential community lot.
Sims don’t permanently live here, but it’s essentially an Airbnb that Sims can temporarily stay in for up to 7 days.
Wedding Venue
These are specific venues that are made to host weddings.
The lot doesn’t have any requirements, but you’re able to add wedding stuff like arches or an indoor area.
Expansion Community Lots
These are lots that require DLC to access. We’ve added the ‘Locked’ section as well;there are several types of community lots that are locked to specific locations. You won’t be able to make your own version, they are unique to the DLC. This is similar to City Living apartments for residential lots.
StrangerVille
Get to Work
This is a permanent lab lot that is either worked at or explored (StrangerVille storyline).

Island Living
This is very similar to a park, but Sims can interact with the water (swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, etc.).

Foxbury/UBrite Commons
These are common areas for the two universities in the game.
UBrite requires a debate podium and microphone, while Foxbury requires robotics workstations and computers.

This is similar to a museum, but at an arts center, Sims can make music.

Unlike bars, this cannot function as a bowling alley when you add lanes.
Auditorium
High School Years
This type only applies to the Auditorium in Rockridge Heights, used by the high school.
High School
This only applies to Copperdale High School, but when school isn’t in session, you can freely edit it.
Thrift and Bubble Tea Store
This is a cafe that sells unique clothing and drinks.
The lot can host a variety of events including fashion shows, comedy nights, and poetry readings.
Recreation Center
Growing Together
This is a family-friendly lot that has an arts center, gym, game room, and play space.
A lot of things can be done here, so you’ll see a wide variety of Sims visit.
Cemetery
Life and Death
This lot has appeared in several expansions, but until Life and Death, it didn’t have its own official assignment.
As expected, cemeteries hold graves, urns, and crypts.
