Summary
The Game Awards' 2024 nominations are officially out, and there is certainly a lot to unpack. Yes,Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is nominated for GOTY, and no, none of Silent Hill 2, Helldivers 2 or Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth made the cut.
GOTY aside, there is another shocking development when it comes to this year’s TGAs.EA Sports College Football 25, the long-awaited return ofEA’scollege football series, is not among the five nominees for Best Sports/Racing title in 2024.
Indeed, the following titles made the cut over College Football 25. They are:
It’s a massive surprise, given the extreme popularity of CFB 25, including its sheer dominating sales numbers coupled with its positive fan reception. One EA dev is fully in agreement with that sentiment.
CFB 25 Was Massive
Taking to Twitter,Jordan Davenport, an EA Sports dev, who worked on CFB 25,per his LinkedIn profile, was absolutely shocked at the news. Davenport noted the game’sstrong Metacritic score (83), as well as its performance in the gaming market as part of the rationale.
Davenport later followed up by calling it “insane” that the game was not nominated, particularly after the decade-plus wait that fans had to endure between releases.
Regardless of how you feel, Davenport does have a point. The game was an absolute success, with 2.2 million people alone coughing up the $100 required to play the game during Early Access. The numbers didn’t stop there, either,as it was recently reported that the game is the all-time best-selling football game in the U.S., and is No. 2 among all sports games in history.
Obviously, sales are only part of the equation, but the game was also critically well-received and continues to be a favorite among fans. An award can’t necessarily make up for all of that, but it is a great prize for the hardworking people who helped make a lot of fans' dreams come true.
