Spoiler warning for Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Summary

BioWaregames are perhaps best remembered for the decisions they force you to make. Whether it’sMass Effect 2’s suicide mission or who gets left in the Fade inDragon Age: Inquisition, many of these decisions revolve around saving and sacrificing our companions.

Dragon Age: The Veilguardis no different. In the final act, there are numerous ways to bump off every member of the gang - and even Rook themself. While you can save most of them with some prep work, you can’t keep everyone alive, because one of two companions will always die right before the final fight: Harding or Davrin.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Players Are Struggling To Choose Between Davrin And Harding

No, it’s not possible to save them both

Over in the Dragon Age subreddit, fans are sharing the turmoil that they went through when having to watch either Davrin or Harding die. To make matters worse, you don’t even explicitly select someone to die - you choose someone to lead a team, and the leader always sacrifices themselves to kill Ghilan’nain.

“I romanced Davrin with my Warden Rook. I selected my guy to lead the distraction team. Ooof. Just, oof,” says Reddit user TheImageworks

As if losing Davrin wasn’t heartbreaking enough, this also kills off Assan. You know, just in case you needed another death on your conscience.

“My husband is still on his first playthrough and approaching the point of no return. He loves Assan, hugs that griffin at least 5 times every time he’s at the lighthouse, but he is also romancing Harding. I’ve been waiting patiently for the heartache,” writes billehmeg.

This got a whole lot of sympathetic replies. “I was romancing Davrin and I chose Davrin because I specifically found him more trustworthy after seeing some deeper sides of him,” says bigxangelx1. “I hope your husband doesn’t follow my thought process with Harding.”

Some Harding loversdidhave that exact thought process. “Romanced Harding my first playthrough. ‘My girl’s been with us since Inquisition, she’s the best scout I know, she’s got this,'” replies Gracelberrypie.

Some hold out hope that whoever we chose is actually still alive. The game makes a point of mentioning that their body was never recovered, so who knows? Maybe they’re out there, chilling with whoever we left in the Fade in Inquisition, waiting to be saved. I suppose we’ll have to wait until Dragon Age 5 to find out…
