Summary

TheDragon Age: The Veilguardart book already revealed that, at one point in development, the team toyed with the idea of bringing back some fan-favourite characters. This would have been done througha quest that let us reunite with whoever was left in the Fade in Dragon Age: Inquisition, making it possible for Hawke, Alistair, Loghain, or Stroud to appear.

Now,BioWare’s lead concept artist Matt Rhodes has shed some light on how this would have worked. Unsurprisingly, whoever had been stuck in the Fade for the past ten years wouldn’t have been doing so hot, but they would have helped us in The Veilguard’s main story.

Dragon Age: Inquisition’s Fade Victim Could Have Helped Us In The Veilguard

Hawke, Alistair, Loghain, or Stroud could have joined Rook against Solas

Sharing the concept art earlier today, Rhodes explained a bit about what we’re seeing here.

“Early on [in development] I assumed we’d be seeing them again, but thought it would be cool if their time spent surviving in that demon-infested dreamscape would permanently leave its mark on them,” he says. “I also thought it would be cool if their fade perspective gave them extra insights into Solas' plans.”

So, depending on your choices, we could have had Hawke come in and save the day, once again teaming up with another player character. Alternatively, it would have been pretty funny to see Loghain have to deal with elven god-induced apocalypses. He would have certainly come a long way.

Couple this with therejected plans for the Hero of Ferelden to appear, and we could have had both them and Hawke meet in The Veilguard - looking absolutely terrible. Or even a nice romantic Warden and Alistair reunion! Oh, the possibilities.

However, it was not meant to be. The Veilguard severely trimmed back world states, so we couldn’t import our Fade decision from Inquisition anyway. There’sevidence in the game’s files that suggests even more decisions were supposed to be included, but ultimately, the final game largely wrote around them.
