Summary
Death Strandinghas suddenly dropped onXboxSeries S and X, withKojima Productionsalso confirming that it now has full ownership of the Death Stranding license.
Five years ago, to this day, one of the most unique games launched on PlayStation 4—Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding. Although it’s a very marmite game for some, Death Stranding has gone on to be a massive success, launchinga whole series that is getting a sequel next yearand amovie adaptation from A24 somewhere down the line.
Since it first released on PS4 all those years ago, Death Stranding has seen multiple ports, including a release on PC via the Director’s Cut and an enhanced edition for PS5that takes many of the PC version’s improvements over to console. The one system that didn’t have Death Stranding was Xbox, but that’s just changed out of nowhere on the game’s five-year anniversary.
Kojima Productions Now Has Exclusive Ownership Of Death Stranding
Earlier today,Kojima Productions confirmed that Death Stranding’s Director’s Cut has gone up for sale on Xbox Series(with a nice 50 percent launch discount to boot) thanks to publisher 505 Games. If you’re an Xbox player who has never had the chance to play Kojima’s latest, then there’s no better time than now.
That’s not all, though. As confirmed by IGN, Kojima Productions also confirmed that it now exclusively owns the rights to Death Stranding, which likely means that any future releases aren’t going to be exclusively tied to PlayStation. It’s not clear what this means (if anything) for Death Standing 2, but it suggests it’ll come to Xbox and PC later down the line.
It is my pleasure to finally announce that Death Stranding Director’s Cut will be delivered to Xbox players. I would like to thank all the fans who have stayed connected with us as well as everyone in the Xbox community who have been patiently waiting. Kojima Productions (Death Stranding) will continue to connect more and more players around the world, so please stay tuned. - Hideo Kojima
It hasn’t been outright confirmed, but this seems to suggest that Death Stranding had a five-year console exclusivity window when it first released on PlayStation. It’s not clear what Kojima Productions owning the IP means for Death Stranding, but it’s clear that the studio is trying to get it into as many hands as possible.
