Summary
A group of talented modders have added Frank West’s original beta design fromDead Rising’s 2005 Tokyo Game Show reveal trailer intoDead Rising Deluxe Remaster.
Considering how long video games take to develop, it should come as no surprise that a lot ofprotagonists go through several redesigns and changes. While the list of gaming characters who have had their looks tweaked during development is very long, there’s one hero who stands out for the frankly ridiculous number of times their appearance has been changed.
I am, of course, talking about Dead Rising’s Frank West. Everyone’s favourite war-covering photojournalisthas looked significantly different in pretty much every title he’s appeared in, from the first game’s classic leather jacket to his weirdly youthful look in Dead Rising 4. While Frank’s gone through a lot of changes over the years, nothing compares to how different he looked during Dead Rising’s early development.
For those that don’t remember,Dead Rising was originally revealed in 2005 during Tokyo Game Show. That first trailer featured a remarkably different design for Frank, complete with a much squarer head and jawline, spiky receding hair, and a green turtleneck to go along with his iconic jacket. It’s a far cry from what we ended up getting in the final game, but it’s still become a beloved part of Frank West’s history.
If, like me, you’ve always wanted to play as the 2005 version of Frank West, then you’ll be happy to know that a few talented Dead Rising fans have made it possible through various mods.As highlighted by Twitter user FrankByDaylight, the first of these modscomes from NexusMods creator countmosh, who has managed to recreate Frank’s 2005 TGS face and added it to Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster.
If you’ve been keeping up with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster’s modding scene, you might remembercountmosh from their work in making the infamous Beam Gun an actual equippable weapon.
That mod makes Frank look almost exactly like he did during Dead Rising’s original reveal trailer, but you can take things a step further bycombining it with BenVargusson’s green turtleneck modandbinary0400’s khakis mod to give Frank his original beta outfit. As you can see from FrankByDaylight’s tweet, the final result is a surprisingly faithful recreation that somehow looks better than the classic 2006 skin.
