Summary

Cyberpunk 2077is one of gaming’s best comeback stories, rivalingNo Man’s Sky. Launching on consoles in an almost unplayable state, the game has undergone a major transformation thanks to the hard work ofCD Projekt Red. There’s more content than ever before, the game looks fantastic, and it has one of the best pieces of DLC of all time,Phantom Liberty.

But, despite its significant overhaul, there’s one thing that fans still can’t quite get their heads around. Why on earth does the food in Cyberpunk 2077 look so janky?

“They Couldn’t Have Made The Food Look A Little Less… PS2?”

The conversation around Cyberpunk 2077’s food recently kicked off onReddit, with userBottlecap_riches’thread on the subject garnering 7,400 upvotes and almost 500 comments.

They posted a picture of a hamburger, two sausages, and some slop (?) that genuinely look like they could be from a late PlayStation 2 title. Matters are made worse by the fact that sitting opposite the protagonist is another character whose hyper-realistic hand is in the shot, making the food look even worse.

Bottlecap’s thoughts accompanied this post. They said, “All the little things we find in this game, to make food items this blocky just seems somewhat… Lazy,” sparking a debate. Many were quick to point out how bad the food was, however, it did have some defenders.

“I assume they couldn’t afford spending extra time to food physics while game was a total mess at beginning. But I’m sure they’d do easily if launch date wasn’t rushed, cause liquid/drinking animations are pretty smooth,“saidKinomino. Another user followed up,saying, “This right here. I hate that people blame the artists for the decisions of executives.”

The conversation then moved to a comparison between Cyberpunk 2077’s sandwiches andStarfield’s, with Bethesda’s looking infinitely better. It was called the ‘Sandwich Paradox’ with Either-Inside4508saying, “This reminds me of the sandwich paradox: a 700 polygon sandwich but no loading screens vs a 70,000 polygon sandwich but lots of loading screens.”

Although there was some bias, coming from theCyberpunk 2077 subreddit, Moxiousone’s comment summed up the opinion of most. “If the price is Starfield levels of blandness, I’ll take the sharp edged sandwich every time,” theysaid.

WithThe Witcher 4 now in development, it will be interesting to see if CD Projekt Red ups its food game.
