Summary
If you didn’t watch The Game Awards last night, then you may have spent a chunk of your morningcatching up with all of the trailers and revealsthat were a part of the show. Some big surprises among them, and as always, a few weirder games that left most viewers confused. Catly appears to have won the award for the most confusing game revealed at this year’s Game Awards, and the confusion has only escalated upon closer inspection.
Catly’s trailer features a group of photorealistic cats playing together before a person, who is presumably their owner, shows up at the end. Nothing about the trailer indicated what type of game it’s supposed to be, but it was revealed that Catly will be coming toSteamandNintendo Switch.
Its Steam pageis already live, and beyond the vague trailer, it’s that which has sparked speculation that Catly might not be a real game. The conversation, which has garnered a lot of attention in the five hours since the game’s reveal, was started byReddit user razorbeamzonthe r/Games subreddit. Some are claiming that the screenshots on Steam look AI-generated, while others are convinced the entire trailer may have been created by AI.
Catly Was One Of The More Surprising Reveals At The Game Awards
Not Necessarily For The Right Reasons
That the trailer was made by AI seems very unlikely. Even though it doesn’t look like a real game, a look at other AI creations proves the technology isn’t capable of creating an almost minute-long video that looks as convincing as this. It’s the game’s description, the supposed screenshots, and where Catly devs SuperAuthenti claim its game will be available that raise noteworthy red flags.
Catly’s Steam description calls it a cat open world and then proceeds to just list random words - some of them descriptors, some of them not - including cuddle, snow, plants, and speed, the four key ingredients in any very real video game. It ends with “all with and via Cats”. I’ve never seen anyone describe something as being via cats before, and now I have, I’m still not sure what it means.
As for where you will supposedly be able to play the game, the Switch is listed as one of its platforms which, if the final product looks anything like the trailer, seems highly unlikely. Even stranger is what appears to be a claim that the game is coming to Apple smartwatches. Not iPhones, just watches. The game’s websitehas a link to what appears to be a companion app for the game through which you will be able to check on your virtual cat.
Catly doesn’t have a release date, but the smartwatch page has a June 19, 2025, date attached it. It’s unclear if that’s a goal for SuperAuthenti or just a placeholder. Maybe we’ll know more about Catly by then, but it seems equally likely we never hear about this game again.
