Summary

We’ve got Spotify Wrapped and all of its copycats, but now, the best 2024 retrospective is in: the AO3 charts. For those of you blissfully unaware, AO3 is a popular fanfiction site, often used to share work that depicts two or more characters in a relationship.

The 2024 charts show us which of these relationships - or ships - were the most popular last year. Quite a few couples from video games have made the cut, although the ones that have may surprise you. Or not, if you’re deep in the fandom mines.

AO3’s Top Ships Of 2024 Revealed

From Astarion/Tav to Soap/Ghost, here’s who was getting it on in 2024

These stats were compiled by going through fanfiction shared on AO3 in 2024. The chart itself was put together by AO3 user centreoftheselights, and the findings can be readhere.

Lots of different media types are represented here, but for our purposes, let’s dive into the video games that made the list. In 2024, seventeen of the most popular fanfiction relationships came from games:

From here, we can see that Baldur’s Gate and League of Legends dominate the charts, each taking multiple places with various characters. However, in the case of League of Legends, credit must go to the TV seriesArcane, since that saw CaitVi and JayVik take off on AO3.

The release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard also saw the series make it into the top 100, having maintained a dedicated fanfiction writing community for years now. Sonic and Shadow also just about squeeze by at the end, a fitting end to the Year of Shadow.

Alas, no game managed to take the overall top spot, with that going to the American TV show 9-1-1. Better luck this year?
