Summary

For a franchise as iconic and long-running asCall of Dutyis, there are very few universally agreed upon opinions.Yes, Modern Warfare (2007) is iconic. Yes,Modern Warfare (2019) was an excellent reimagining. Yes, the Dual Rangers were OP. And, yes,we can 1v1 on Rust any day of the week.

That said, there are tons of unpopular opinions. The kind of unpopular opinion that would likely get you thrown into the gulag. But these COD fans were willing to share their takes in a massive Reddit thread, and while some are controversial, others are perfectly acceptable.

These are their stories…

Press F To Pay Respects

First and foremost, this user started the thread off hot by asserting that 2013’s Ghosts was not only “good,” but “ahead of its time,” too. It turns out, they weren’t alone in believing that Ghosts received a little too much flak. “Its perk system was really innovative,“one user wrote in defense of the first PS4/Xbox One COD title. “Shame it hasn’t returned yet.”

Indeed,Ghosts reinvented the system by putting points into categories (Speed, Handling, etc.) and assigning them point values. Speed perks, for example, helped players get ahead quickly, with perks like Sleight of Hand, while Handling provided players with better control over their characters, with perks like Steady Aim.

Elsewhere,a user asserted that they would rather see another WW2-era game than another “modern” era video game. “Every time a WWII game releases, people complain about over saturation, WWII hasn’t been over saturated for over 15 years,“a user wrote in response.

And they’re not wrong, either. For as much as WW2 is considered “oversaturated,” of late, there have only been two WW2-themed games from COD (WW2 and Vanguard) and only one from Battlefield (V). It’s actually an era in dire need of a return, if anything.

Meanwhile, this user went scorched earth by writing that Black Ops 2’s Zombies weren’t good. “Innovating, yes. But gameplay wise, it sucked,” they explained, adding that the better maps were locked behind paywalls.

Black Ops 2 Zombies are often well-revered by fans, particularly the TranZit map for its unconventional approach. But as one fan wrote in response, it paved Zombies in a positive way, but could’ve done a lot more gameplay-wise.

And last, but certainly not least, this user had this to say about a fan-favorite map: “Nuketown is **** and always has been.”

Oof. That one cuts particularly deep as Nuketown has long been a staple of COD, particularly the Black Ops games. It’s almost tradition at this point, and in Black Ops 6, things are currently rather fesitive. “Wildly overrated,“one user added.Yikes!

As for this writer, I am with the top commenter in that Ghosts was actually excellent. Its campaign, in particular, was well-done from a story perspective, and its ending cliffhanger almost certainly warrants a sequel.
