Call of Dutyhas always been about duality. Not in some deep philosophical way, but with regard to the difference between the campaign and multiplayer. The campaign is usually serious and includes putting some world-ending faction in its place, while the multiplayer mode features Nicki Minaj or someone overtly blinged out diving around corners to get a shot.
Call of Duty skins have been a divisive topic in the last few years, since they’ve been getting more ridiculous with each installment. Purists would prefer to see military-esque outfits, those on the fence don’t mind celebs likeLebron James, and then there are those who like off-the-rails skins like an Operator with a rubber duck head. Treyarch’s reasoning behind these absurd cosmetics is that they’re fun.
That’s One Way To Make Your Game Fun
In a conversation withDexerto, associate creative director at Treyarch, Miles Leslie spoke about how the team tries to balance fun and realism in Black Ops 6.
“Fun always comes first for us,” said Leslie. “Of course, we want to stay grounded in the DNA that makes a Black Ops game unique when it comes to core gameplay, but we also like to break the rules if it’s going to maximize fun for players.
“When it comes to cosmetics, the Black Ops series naturally lends itself to some pretty outlandish themes when you consider we’re the birthplace of Call of Duty Zombies and all of the crazy mindf**kery that comes with the storytelling in our games, so we like to have fun there too. The team has already delivered some of my all-time favorite Operator Skins, and we’re only in the first season.”
However, Leslie assured fans that the gritty campaigns will remain grounded in realism. “The campaign has a tightly defined cast of characters with an era-specific look to them that fits the story that we and our friends at Raven Software are telling,” he said. “This is something we take very seriously at the studio, and those who remember the continuing story with Stitch and Perseus throughout Black Ops Cold War’s seasons will know what I’m talking about."
Also, considering that whacky cosmetics put a lot of money in Activision’s pockets, they’re probably going to stick around for a long time.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
WHERE TO PLAY
Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower. With a mind-bending narrative, and unbound by the rules of engagement, this is signature Black Ops.
