Summary

In 2012, Activision released the first of many futuristicCall of Dutygames, Black Ops 2, set in the far-flung future of…2025.

Yes, Black Ops 2 is now a contemporary game. Yes, we’re getting old. But what’s especially interesting is what Activision and Treyarch predicted for 2025, fromthe EUdissolving to the first woman to be elected as the American president.

What Black Ops 2 Predicted 2025 Would Look Like

In 2018, an organisation known as Cordis Die hacks into the Chinese Stock Exchange, causing China to ban the trade of rare minerals, thus starting a second Cold War with NATO.

So, by 2025, we’re already seven years into a repeat of the 50-year-long global conflict that dominated the 20th century, albeit with far more advanced technology. Robots and drones control the battlefield, and there’s even a quantum computer capable of hacking any device.

In response, China forms the Strategic Defense Coalition to bring Asia together under one military command. 11 different countries, including North Korea, join during its founding, but many do so out of fear of being invaded by China.

Cordis Die leader Raul Menendez stages an assassination attempt against the Afghan President on June 5, and the French President on June 18. Later that month, America plots its own assassination against SDC Chairman Tian Zhao after learning of his plans to invade Russia.

The war then spills out into several American cities such as Los Angeles on June 19 when Cordis Die unleashes a fleet of drones. China is also targeted.

It’s worth noting that, depending on your choices in the story, China and Russia can ally with America and NATO by the end.

Black Ops 2 also predicted that fictional Speaker of the House Marion Bosworth would be the first woman elected as President of America. And in the Strike Team mobile game, it’s revealed that she is indeed a Democrat.

Inaugurated in 2021, she is still in power by 2025, gaining popularity through her “Bridge the Gap” campaign which seeks to repair relations with China. At the time of Black Ops 2’s release, many compared her to Hillary Clinton.

Earlier in the year, on March 14, Germany and France announce that they are leaving the EU. With two economic powerhouses pulling out of the coalition, the already struggling Euro crashes, losing nearly 70 percent of its value. In response, the Treaty of Rome and the Maastricht Treaty are dissolved, as both countries return to their native currency. Ultimately, on September 17, the EU is disbanded.

So, Black Ops 2 wasn’t exactly Nostradamus when it came to predictions (or even The Simpsons), but it’s an interesting glimpse into Treyarch’s outlook for the future all the same.
