The indie spaceis filled with bright ideas: Nunholy was probably conceived when Korean developer Chowbie looked at Hades and thought, “You know what this game really needs? Hot nuns.” Thus, this roguelike PvE battler was born. Nunholy stars three anime Sisters with a capital S hunting down a vampire queen.
With an undead army between you and the final boss, you can’t expect to make it through Nunholy unscathed on your first run. The gameplay loop is based around improvement of your weapons and stats, but your starting gear plays a role too. Which weapons are best, and which should you invest in? We’ve got you covered.
Silver coins accumulate across runs and allow you to upgrade weapons.
8Keen Gunaxe
Given Preiya’s status as the de facto mascot of the game, Keen Gunaxe is likely the first weapon you’ll start using. It’s viable into the endgame. The Keen Gunaxe deals physical damage, which sounds basic. However, physical attacks have the ability to land critical hits where other damage types don’t.
Every lucky shot gets you double damage. you may defeat early-game bosses without taking damage using well-timed dodges and the Keen Gunaxe alone. It also recharges the bullets for Preiya’s sawn-off sub-weapon.
7Gold Cross
Aside from your main weapons and subweapons, which cannot be changed once you’ve selected them at the start of a run, Nunholy has a host of artifact weapons. These are essentially passive attacks that stack on top of your pre-existing main and sub-weapons.
The Gold Cross is one of themost basic and useful ones: there’s a one-in-three chance it’ll deal additional physical damage when you hit an enemy with your main weapon. Although you’ll probably dump it in the late game, for early-game it’s a priceless tool for dealing with bosses.
6Dragon’s Breath
Shotguns area cool weapon. They’re even cooler when their barrel is the wrong end of an axe. Preiya’s starting sub-weapon is Dragon’s Breath, which fires two rounds of buckshot at enemies. Apart from its short but useful range, the main reason Dragon’s Breath is so useful is its damage type. It burns enemies, dealing damage even after you’ve moved on.
You can defeat enemies from a safe distance by burning them - and the burn effects stack. True, this gun’s small chamber poses a problem - until you gain some passive abilities that have a chance of providing instant reloads.
Using your main weapon charges up Dragon’s Breath much faster, so you cannot play Preiya as an exclusively ranged character.
5Flaming Stake
Marie is the game’s gunner class, so to speak. Both her main and sub-weapons are ranged, and their synergy is interesting. Marie uses her subweapon - a slow-firing machine gun that runs the risk of overheating - to charge up her main weapon, the Flaming Stake.
Once her sub-weapon overheats and is no longer able to fire, Marie can use Flaming Stake to deal a powerful, short-ranged attack. This ensures her sub-weapon pays for itself: the more it overheats, the more she can use Flaming Stake.
4Flames Of Purification
Marie’s status as the gunslinger makes her the easiest class for beginners. Her Flames of Purification weapon, which shoots blue projectiles that deal holy damage, aims itself for you. As long as you’re not moving, Marie’s sub-weapon has proximity aim. Holy damage stacks, and once it quadruples it deals a bonus AoE attack to enemies.
Since Flames of Purification is a holy weapon, and it fires like a machine gun, you can see how many bonus AoE attacks it can potentially trigger. Fire away, Chicago-style - and don’t forget to use the main weapon once this one overheats.
The auto-aim only works as long as you don’t attempt to control the direction yourself, and has a fairly short range that can be upgraded.
3Holy Sword
Holy Sword is an artifact weapon that deals additional damage lasting for several frames at the point your skill hits enemies. With characters like Preiya with her Spinning Slash ability, this essentially means you get an AoE attack on top of your AoE attack.
Here’s the icing on the cake: you can pick up multiple holy swords. And each of them triggers separately. This turns Spinning Slash into a deadly ability for crowd control. As an added bonus, it has a straightforward shape, so you can keep it in your inventory until the endgame.
2Projection: Drop
Sain is the most challenging character to play as, due to her lack of specialization in either melee or ranged attacks. Instead, she makes up for it with overwhelming power. You’ll have to practice and lose a few runs with Sain, but her Projection: Drop weapon will immediately draw your eye nonetheless.
Projection: Drop spawns a line of daggers that stab into the ground in front of Sain. With a full charge, this can be devastating. Even better, enemies defeated by this weapon can drop a pickup that recharges the weapon, creating a feedback loop of daggers.
1Flaming Gunaxe
Preiya is the best character for a balanced build and enjoying the game at any skill level. Her Flaming Gunaxe makes things all the more fun, because it behaves similarly to the Keen Gunaxe while adding a burn effect.
Dashing in Nunholy gives you invincibility frames. Equipping the Flaming Gunaxe, slashing at enemies, making them burn, stacking a combo and then dashing away makes you virtually invulnerable. The undead won’t stand a chance against you: Flaming Gunaxe is a prime candidate for being referred to as a busted weapon.
